The Attack Was Beat Back
CNET News reports that the web is somewhat safe again after a Russian server that was sending out hackers code aimed at Internet Explorer was shut-down by net engineers. If a web site server was previously infected, the attempt to redirect the viewer to the Russian server will not connect. To determine if your computer is infected, right click anywhere on the task bar and select Task Manager. In the window that appears search under Image Name for files named: Kk32.dll or Surf.dat/. If either of these files are present you should run a anti-virus program like the free software from AVG. Web security advisors expect a similar attack in the future and as we have previously advised, find an alternative browser and PC people should not use Internet Explorer. The Microsoft press release included the following statement:
“REDMOND, Wash., June 25, 2004 - Microsoft is committed to helping customers keep their information safe. We are currently working with law enforcement and industry partners to identify the individuals or entities responsible for a new Internet attack, known as Download.Ject, and bring those responsible for this criminal act to justice.

On Thursday, June 24, at 4:00 p.m. PDT, Microsoft responded to reports that some enterprise customers running un-patched versions of IIS 5.0 (Internet Information Services), a component of Windows 2000 Server, were being targeted by malicious code, known as Download.Ject. More information is available at: http://www.microsoft.com/downloadject. This site will be updated as new information becomes available.

Microsoft's security response teams are dedicated to analyzing, resolving and communicating progress to customers in a timely manner. It is important to note that at this time Microsoft is not aware of widespread customer impact based on Download.Ject. Microsoft has confirmed with its partners that this attack is not a "worm" or virus-in other words, this attack is a targeted manual attack by individuals or entities towards a specific server.”

HP Laptops With Bad Memories
CNET reports that as many as 900,ooo HP laptops have a memory module that can malfunction and cause system crashes. Intel IDs Chip Flaw

Apple Wins Big At 2004 IDEA

The Power Mac G5 received the Gold award in Computer Equipment as did the iPod mini in Consumer Products. The iSight and the Apple Wireless Keyboard took the silver and bronze in Business and Industrial Products and Computer Equipment, respectively.

Learn More About Hijacking
PCStats has great information on browser hijacking and how Windows owners can stop the same. At Multipleplatforms.com we emphasize that you should be smart about downloads and attachments, always have anti-virus protection active and updated, and do not use Internet Explorer as your PC browser (we like Slim Browser and/or anything by Mozilla for the PCs) and PCStats recommends the same. PCStats has another excellent suggestion, keep a PC rescue kit for emergency battles against hijacking. You might also include a XP SP1 security update disk available free from Microsoft. A link and directions on how to get the SP1 disk are located at our how-to page. PCStats left out the B and B of the geeks code: BUB, Backup (update), and Backup. Are We Selling Out?
If you have noticed the ads for Google and Amazon appearing on the pages of this website you are an astute observer and a repeat visitor and we thank you. If you are thinking we are selling out, please allow us to explain. This website is a labor of love however that love has a price. The domain name registration and hosting fees are significant. The “I” in the we of Multipleplatforms is a graduate student and I am not earning much money currently; luckily, my wife (the other half of the we) is employed but not amused with the extra expenses I am incurring creating and establishing this site and the demand on my time that accompanies it. Therefore, the ads are an attempt to offset the startup costs of this site and keep my wife happy (not necessarily in that order); any additional income that might be generated will be used for future hosting costs and will be used to invest in new products to test and report on for the site. The Google ads are generated based on the content of this web page and if you are interested in the product advertised, please click on the link to learn more. These links are monitored by Google and are not links to spammers and adult sites. Amazon generates their links in part, by the choices they think you will be interested in, and for best value from Amazon; if you want to purchase something else from Amazon, you can click on the Amazon icon. You can read more about this topic in eWeek (Reprint from Friday, FYI).
